July and August, for many students in this municipality, are the longest, loneliest months, when friends and stimulating encounters are a desert away. For the third year running, in July 2023, we planned several days of Summer activities. Portraits Photographer Vitorino Coragem developed a workshop on portraits. We called participants on WhatsApp and invited those we met on the streets and also in their homes to come and have their portraits taken. Every picture was later offered to each participant to be shared with those far away or used in their CVs. The following day, the group of teenagers, alongside the photographer, took portraits of each other, paying attention to details such as light, space and facial expression, as well as taking photographs of the hands of a group of women embroidering with thread and cloth working in a sewing workshop in that same space. Hike Nídia Barata is an animal carer who lives in her grandfather’s farm, surrounded by animals, near Vila do Bispo. We walked through the land accompanied by nature guide Ana Carla Cabrita, who explained what we usually do not see near the ground. With the animals roaming in total freedom, the group approached the cliffs. Before returning, we all dived in the ocean. Symbols The 2023 Summer BOWING ended with a visit from José Torres, the web designer of BOWING DOC, who developed a laboratory about symbols. The young people drew icons from books and memories that now populate various pages of this website.
This year, the young participants were already looking forward to these days, keen to see their friends again. Summer BOWING celebrates this reunion while at the same time offering moments and opportunities made possible by the flexible schedules and free time of these young people on holidays.
