When we offer someone close attention, curiosity and time, a new and rich encounter with a growing intimacy is ready to start. We have worked individually with many people, being available and interested in each one. We listened to stories, shared meals and got to know the houses where they live. These encounters cannot be forced - there shouldn’t be any sense of duty. It takes time, hours, months. Throughout 2021 and 2022 many friendships were generated with migrants who felt isolated, in need of a space to speak and be heard. Besides facilitating their integration into the region and finding a space of shelter and security, this ‘Dive into the other’ opened doors into various cultures, social realities, into homes and lives often inaccessible to the Portuguese. New artistic ideas developed from conversations and experiences. A network of contacts was created alongside the development of many friendships and the chance to know the potentials and talents of each person. The individual interactions allowed us to explore a dimension that group sessions and large rehearsals could not. The ‘Dive into the other’ happened inside our cars during rides we took between rehearsals and homes, schools and workplaces. In the cars, stories, music, languages and cultures were shared. It also happened inside kitchens, bedrooms, on walks in the countryside or during meals. Each person is a rich and complex being full of knowledge, ideas and singular ways of living. At some point, many migrants from various parts of the region came close to the project in search of help with language learning, with public services, with health issues. We started to be known amongst the migrant community for this kind of attention. The ‘Dive into the other’ is afterall, the individual attention given to each person we met, we worked with and lived.
